Humanist – On The Edge Of A Lost And Lonely World

Humanist - On The Edge Of A Lost And Lonely World (Bella Union, 26.07.2024) COVER(52:21; Vinyl, CD, Digital; Bella Union/Rough Trade, 26.07.2024)
I must admit that until a few days ago, I had not heard of or known anything about Humanist, the band led by British guitarist, producer, and songwriter Rob Marshall. However, after listening to their self-titled debut album “Humanist” and now their new album “On The Edge Of A Lost And Lonely World”, they have quickly become one of my new favorite bands.
It is impossible to escape the vast array of nuances found in their albums. They take us from industrial and gothic rock to classic alternative rock, even venturing into shoegaze in some songs, where we appreciate the different textures and distortions of the guitars. This is all complemented by remarkable collaborations with artists such as Tim Smith (Midlake/Harp), Isobel Campbell, Ed Harcourt, James Allan (Glasvegas), and Peter Hayes (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club), among others. These contributions make this album a fantastic work, offering a variety of sonic and vocal shades in each song.
Among all the collaborations, the poignant voice of Dave Gahan from Depeche Mode stands out in the song ‘Brother’. This is a very personal song, a tribute to the late Mark Lanegan, with whom Rob Marshall (of Humanist) worked on the albums ‘Gargoyle” and ‘Somebody’s Knocking”. Dave Gahan, another old friend of Mark, seemed like the perfect choice to sing ‘Brother’.

The album consists of 13 songs and has a total duration of 52 minutes. Personally, I highlight the songs: ‘This Holding Pattern’, ‘Brother’, ‘Happy’, ‘Too Many Rival’ and ‘The Immortal’.

However, the entire album is quite enjoyable, as it explores very emotional and existential themes such as life, death, hope, suffering, and friendship. The variety of sounds, very profound and well-developed, makes us feel this album in a very close yet subtle way.
