Isildurs Bane & Peter Hammill – In Amazonia

HAMMdulILLah – Ich progshippe jetzt! Allerdings wurde die uns im Folgenden beschäftigende Traumverbindung schon Ende 2017 geschmiedet, als Peter Hammill wie zuvor schon his H-ness Steve Hogarth zur IB Expo-Konzertwoche jenes Jahres eingeladen worden war. Und genau wie bei H (vgl. Colours Not Found In Nature) folgt der stark improvisierten Live-Arbeit ein Studio-Werk auf dem Fuß – jottlob, möchte man gerade in diesem Falle sagen.

Zur zu diesem Opus führenden Arbeitsweise erfahren wir vom Hauptkomponisten Mats Johansson: “Apart from fantastic lyrics and vocal melodies, he (i.e. Peter Hammill) has influenced part of my composing process in a very positive way. I noticed that I could skip about with rhythms, beats, keys and almost atonal parts. Nothing seemed to worry Peter. Not only that, but he delivered his parts quickly and in places I hadn’t expected. That, in a sense, made him the captain of the ship every now and then. Needless to say, he surprised me on several occasions and always in a really good way!”
P.H. himself ergänzt: “I dived into finding what top lines I could with enthusiasm, for there’s lots of lovely angularity in this stuff. I was, though, working somewhat in the dark and when I sent off my first efforts didn’t know what kind kind of reaction I’d get. Happily it was positive…so I then got on with honing the lyrics and, gradually, finding out what the piece was about. Along the way there have been various revisions, additions, subtractions and shufflings around and it’s ended up being, I think, a fascinating collision of all sorts of musical styles.”

Und was hat der Hörer von alldem? Der Aufmacher ‘Before You Know’ setzt bereits starke atmosphärische Signale durch die mal an Mondlaute, mal an Harfe erinnernde Koto von Karin Nakagawa, bedrohliche Harmonik und eine erste Vollbedienung von Peters unheilvollem, stets über Halb- und Vierteltöne jaulenden Vokal-Schamanismus.

Die asiatische Einfärbung ist bei ‘Under The Current’ sogar noch stärker – und womöglich noch ästhetischer.

Das besonders starke ‘This Is Where? bezieht seine Kraft u.a. von den elektrisierend puckernden Vibraphon-Rhythmen, den Saxophon-Parts (die Peters Stimme erwiesenermaßen einfach unverschämt gut stehen) und nicht zuletzt von ausgesprochenen Frippertronics in der Gitarrenarbeit, sämig abgeschmeckt mit etwas Mellotron-Soße!

‘The Day Is Done’ ist damit verglichen, ruhiger, langsamer, Piano-genügsamer. Aber genau deswegen besonders delikat. ‘This Bird Has Flown’ ist eine dreiminütige Coda, nicht mehr, nicht weniger.

Die uns vorliegende CD-Edition ist auch optisch ein Sinnenfest – denn die sattgrüne Regenwald-Ästhetik wird konsequent durchgezogen. Das Booklet verzeichnet zwar en detail jedes Instrument, das Mats verwendet hat (z.B. ARP 2600, Mini Moog Model D, Oberheim Xpander, Yamaha CP80 u. CS80, Roland RS-202, Nord Lead A1 etc. Das ist toll, die Texte aber werden nicht reproduziert – schade.

Sit ego in amazonia. Wie wunderbar. Unser Album der Woche ist natürlich auch als LP, konkret passenderweise auf dunkelgrünem Vinyl erhältlich.
